Translated from the Greek by the Holy Transfiguration Monastery
“The Great Horologion is a handbook for anyone who wishes to pray, either in common or in private, with the words and forms bequeathed us by the Apostles, the holy Fathers, and all the Saints, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It provides not only the order of the services, but supplies also the invariable texts which form their structure. In it are found the psalms which are appointed for the prescribed times of prayer throughout the whole day and night, for, according to the Psalmist: ‘Seven times a day have I praised Thee for the judgments of Thy righteousness’ (Psalm 118:164), and: ‘At midnight I arose to give thanks unto Thee for the judgments of Thy righteousness’ (Psalm 118:62). Also herein are the texts of fixed hymns and prayers which are part of the daily cycle.”
