A volume of Blessed Theophylact’s Explanation of the New Testament
“In this publication of The Explanation of the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians, the scope of the translation has been expanded to include the commentary by St. Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain (1748-1809). This version by St. Nicodemus is based entirely on the work of Blessed Theophylact (reposed approximately 1107); in turn, Blessed Theophylact’s commentary is based on St. John Chrysostom’s expansive homilies on the New Testament epistles. Thus there is an unbroken tradition of epistolary interpretation, leading back to the fifth century. Blessed Theophylact’s commentary on the Gospels and the longer epistles, such as Romans and Corinthians, is full and extensive. But in the shorter epistles, such as Galatians and Ephesians, his commentary is considerably curtailed. One could speculate that he needed to speed up his rate of production in order to complete the New Testament epistles in his life time. [...]But by utilising the version of St. Nicodemus, the fullness of the text is restored.”
