“Initially[...this...]book was to be a condensed translation of Innokentii, Mitropolit Moskovskii i Kolomenskii po ego sochineniiam pis’mam i razskazam sovremennikov [Innocent, Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, According to His Writings, Letters, and the Stories of His Contemporaries] by Ivan Barsukov (Moscow: 1883). Soon, however, it became clear that this would be inadequate. [...]Barsukov himself was not content to stop there, but continued for the next twenty years collecting materials on this great hierarch which he eventually published in six volumes. Turning to these, we found them often superior in content, style and clarity to those included in the early biography. [...]When subsequently another source[...]was found to augment the narrative[...], it was decided to work directly from the primary sources rather than be bound to Barsukov’s rather limited initial collection.”
