Volume One, Part Two of John Chrysostom and His Time

“Chrysostom is the only one among the Greek Fathers of the Church who was, as it were, baptized twice. He went through life under the name of John; he is known to posterity as Chrysostom, the Golden-mouth, and this name he earned in the pulpit. Nothing that he accomplished as an exegete, as an author or as a bishop, brought him this distinction, but what he accomplished as a preacher, an announcer of the Word of God. That was what obviously appeared to his contemporaries as most distinguished and most noteworthy in him. Unfortunately this is also the side of Chrysostom which has perished with him. His acts as a bishop are known to us; his explanations of Holy Scripture and his sermons survive as literary compositions. But the living word, the warm tone, the individual art, the overpowering inspiration, his movements and his whole deportment, which constitute the individual and characteristic art of a preacher, all that can be felt only faintly and dimly, and only imperfectly experienced, through the surviving written sermons and orations. These flowers of pleasure are the exclusive privilege of the contemporaries of a great, orator; though it cannot be said that there are no orators whose speeches are easier to read than to listen to.”
