“Everything is ready, Nicephorus! Are you going?‘ Juliana’s voice could just be heard over the playful surf, lapping at the fray of pebbles on the sandy beach with its foam. Nicephorus spread out the edge of the net across his open palm and smiled as he looked at his work. The weave could in no way be distinguished from his father’s. Despite never having done this kind of work before, after a short apprenticeship under his father, he had skillfully twisted the flaxen threads, tightly tied the knots, and wove the fishing nets like the capable and more experienced weavers. With these skills he would be able to help out his father, who earned his living selling nets. He took another glance at the net and then turned his gaze further into the distance. At his feet, the Bosphorus opened up exquisitely. Streaked by the rays of the sun, the blue water glittered with innumerable, scattered diamonds, and the opposite shore, covered in lush vegetation and beautiful mansions of white marble, reflected hazily in the sapphire gulf. Boats and small schooners with high masts and ornate figureheads carved from wood, triremes and small ships with travelers and merchandise, fifty-oared vessels and royal barges: all of them left deeply colored channels behind as they cut through the water, presenting a distinctly picturesque quality to the ocean view.”
