Cyril of Alexandria
Translated with an Introduction by Robert Charles Hill
Volume II of Commentary on Isaiah
“After fully completing the account of the Babylonians and the Philistines, he shifts the prophecy in turn to Moab, that is, to[...]the capital of the Moabites, the whole country and the kingdom itself. They were a barbarous nation, hateful to God, doubtless because of being utterly devoted to the worship of the idols, with complete trust in magical skills, opposition to the glory of God, and intense hostility to the people of Israel. For instance, when they were freed from the Egyptians’ oppression and reached the land of promise, they almost perished, thanks to the scheme of Balak, who was king of the Moabites at the time. Scripture records it in Numbers in these terms: ‘All the people of Israel camped to the west of Moab across the Jordan from Jericho. Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, and Moab was in great dread of the people because they were numerous.’ Then what was the scheme he hatched? He bribed Balaam of Mesopotamia, a false prophet and augur, and then urged him in the words, Curse Israel for me, ‘for I know that those you bless are blessed, and those you curse are cursed.’ Though some of the forms of quackery were practiced by him, with erection of altars and offering of sacrifices, Balak’s hope was dashed and his purpose frustrated when the man who had been hired to curse Israel unexpectedly blessed it.”
