Book Five of Great Ascetics of Russia

“Archbishop Anthony, the future luminary of the Russian Church, was the son of Father Gavrilov, a humble priest in the village of Povstina, in the district of Piryatinsky, of the province of Poltava. He was born on October 29, 1773, on the feast of St. Abraham of Rostov, whose name was given to the newborn child. From his early years he took part in church life, revealed a great love for divine services and even when he was an adolescent tried not to miss a service. Once, when he was still a boy, his father did not take him to church on New Year’s day. When he awoke, Abraham ran to church but, on the way, as he was crossing the frozen river, he fell down an ice hole. He was fished out by passers-by and returned to his mother.”
