Volume 8 of Modern Orthodox Saints
“The most recent widely recognized saint of Greece, Savvas the New of Kalymnos, the miracle-worker, was born in 1862 at Herakleitsa of Eastern Thrace. The month of his birth is not recorded in the documents we have regarding him. At Holy Baptism he was given the name of Vasilios, ‘Basil.’ His parents, Constantine and Smaragda, secured for him primary education. Being poor, they could not provide him with higher education, had he desired it. Hence, after Vasilios had completed his elementary schooling, his father found employment for him, that he might earn his own livelihood.” —“Introductory”
